Computer Security: Network Monitoring
June 19, 2008 12:09 pm Computer Security, ComputersEmployers have the right to monitor what their employees are doing with company property. Privacy advocates may scream foul when they hear about the practices most companies use to monitor their employees, but clearly those advocates have never run a business. Its true that most employees are hard-working, honest citizens; but the few bad apples in a company can quickly destroy that companys bottom line.
Network Monitoring Software
Most companies today concentrate their monitoring efforts on their computer networks. Computers are an essential part of nearly every employees day. They are also a great source of distraction for employees. The Internet is a fabulous place to explore, conduct research, and have a good time. Unfortunately, many employees cannot draw the distinction between playtime and worktime.
Network monitors let employers see how long every employee on the network is spending online. They also detail the time spent sending instant messages or personal emails. Network monitors with keyloggers can even track how quickly employees are working. A steep decline in the number of strokes recorded one hour might mean employees are a lot chattier than they should be.
Network monitors can also allow employers to capture screen shots of employee computers while they are working. In this way, employers can see exactly how their employees are spending time at work. If an employees prime application never seems to be active, managers can conclude that productivity is probably not as high as it should be.
